1. Dolphin and whale watching

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Dolphin and whale watching

Why do we recommend this activity?

This is undoubtedly Madeira’s most emblematic nautical activity. The archipelago is one of Europe’s top cetacean-watching destinations, with clear waters and temperatures that attract dolphins and whales all year round. We were impressed by how close we were to these animals during our catamaran trip: it’s an experience you don’t find everywhere. We offer a wide range of products, from small speedboats to eco-friendly boats, so that everyone can find the formula that’s right for them.

What you will see

  • Dolphins in the open sea, often in groups
  • Whales in season
  • Madeira’s spectacular coastline seen from the ocean
  • Sometimes a swim under the cliffs of Cabo Girão

Several formulas are available to suit your needs:

  • Ecological catamaran with swimming under Cabo Girão – our favorite. The boat is equipped with hybrid electric motors, more respectful of aquatic fauna. – See prices, photos and availability
  • Fast boat for more adrenalin and a larger search area for cetaceans – See prices, photos and availability
  • Inflatable boat for small groups, sometimes allowing you to swim close to the dolphins. See prices, photos and availability
  • A sunset sailboat trip in search of cetaceans – See prices, photos and availability

How much time should I allow?

Excursions generally last between 2h30 and 3h. The best period is from April to October, but resident species are present all year round. Book in advance in high season.

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING YOUR CAR AT Madeira
  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • Take a car with a good engine for hilly roads, but not too big for manoeuvring.
  • There’s plenty of demand and few cars, so book early.

2. Cruises and boat trips

Best nautical activities in Madeira - Cruises and boat trips

Why do we recommend this activity?

In our opinion, sailing around Madeira is a unique way of discovering the island from an angle not possible by road. Steep cliffs, wild bays and volcanic formations take on a whole new dimension when seen from the sea. We particularly enjoyed sailing along the coast on a catamaran at sunset. What’s more, some cruises include a swimming break or dinner on board, making it a complete outing.

3. Swimming in natural pools

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Porto Moniz natural pools

Why do we recommend this activity?

Madeira is not a beach destination in the classical sense of the word, but it offers unique bathing experiences thanks to its natural pools. Formed by the cooling of volcanic lava in contact with the sea, they are sheltered natural basins where bathing is pleasant and safe. We were particularly taken with the Porto Moniz swimming pools. The views are superb, with open seas, offshore islands and green mountains in the background.

What you will see

  • Porto Moniz‘s natural pools are the most accessible, with several well-defined basins.
  • The wilder pools of Seixal, with a lava arch and access at the foot of the cliffs
  • Panoramic views of the sea and the island’s relief

If you don’t want to drive all the way to Porto Moniz, organized tours take you there as part of an island tour – see program and availability.

To find out more about all the island’s natural pools: see our article dedicated to Madeira’s natural pools.

How much time should I allow?

Allow 2 to 3 hours on site. Some swimming pools charge a small fee (a few euros), so bring plenty of cash. Avoid the 11 a.m.-3 p.m. tourist rush hour. In our opinion, early morning or late afternoon is a more pleasant experience.

4. Ferry to Porto Santo

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Ferry to Porto Santo

Why do we recommend this activity?

Taking the ferry to Porto Santo means a complete change of scenery in just a few hours. The neighboring island is lower, more arid, and above all boasts a 9km long beach of fine sand, in stark contrast to Madeira’s rugged coastline. We loved this day’s getaway: the crossing itself is an experience, with beautiful views of Madeira’s east coast, the Ponta de São Lourenço and the ocean as far as the eye can see. Porto Santo is also known as the island of pirates and privateers, giving it a character all its own.

Best nautical activities in Madeira - Porto Santo boat

What you will see

  • Madeira’s east coast and Ponta de São Lourenço from offshore
  • The long, golden sandy beach of Porto Santo (9km)
  • The island’s dunes, basalt pipes and natural pools
  • Views over the gentler hills of Porto Santo

The ferry features bars, a restaurant, a cinema and children’s play areas. One ferry leaves in the morning, another returns in the evening.

  • Book your ferry – see prices and availability

How much time should I allow?

The crossing takes 2h30 each way. Allow a full day, or more if you want to explore the island at your own pace.

5. Surfing Madeira

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Surfing

Why do we recommend this activity?

Madeira isn’t the first destination that springs to mind for surfing, but the island has some quality spots. Porto da Cruz, on the north coast, is one of the most renowned. The waves are regular and the setting, at the foot of the mountains, is breathtaking. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer, local schools offer courses to suit all levels. We recommend this activity for those wishing to combine sport with immersion in the island’s coastal landscapes.

What you will see

  • The waves of Madeira’s north coast
  • The village of Porto da Cruz and its volcanic setting
  • The cliffs and black sand beaches of the north coast
  • Surfing lessons in Porto da Cruz with a local surf school – See pxhotos, prices and availability

How much time should I allow?

A beginner’s course generally lasts 2 hours. To progress, several sessions over several days are recommended.

6. Kayaking in the Garajau reserve

Best water sports and sea activities in Madeira - Kayaking in the Garajau reserve

Why do we recommend this activity?

Kayaking is a gentle, sporty way to explore Madeira’s coastline, up close to the rocks and coastal formations. The Garajau nature reserve, to the east of Funchal, is one of the best areas for this activity. The waters are protected, transparent and rich in marine life. We particularly appreciate this formula because it combines physical effort with immersion in nature, without impacting on the environment. What’s more, most kayak excursions include a snorkeling session afterwards.

What you will see

  • The clear waters of the Garajau marine reserve
  • Colorful fish and marine life in the reserve
  • Cliffs and coastal landscapes seen from the sea
  • Kayaking and guided snorkeling in the Garajau reserve – See prices, photos and availability
  • See all kayaking options in Madeira – See all options

How much time should I allow?

Allow between 2h30 and 3h for a guided excursion including kayaking and snorkeling.

7. Snorkeling

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Scuba diving

Why do we recommend this activity?

Snorkeling in Madeira is accessible to all, without any previous experience, and allows you to discover a wealth of underwater life. The Garajau nature reserve, off the coast of Caniço, offers ideal conditions. Clear waters, moderate currents and marine biodiversity protected for decades. We find it one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the island’s natural environment, away from the hustle and bustle on the surface.

What you will see

  • Colorful fish and varied marine fauna in the Garajau reserve
  • Sea turtles, depending on the season
  • Coastal scenery from the sea
  • See all snorkeling options in Madeira – See all options

How much time should I allow?

A guided snorkeling session usually lasts between 2 and 3 hours. Some kayak packages include snorkeling, so you can combine the two activities in a single outing.

8. Scuba diving

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Snorkeling

Why do we recommend this activity?

Madeira’s waters offer remarkable diving conditions, with often excellent visibility and unspoilt marine life. The island enjoys a favorable geographic location, at the crossroads of Atlantic currents that favor biodiversity. Here you can encounter colorful tropical fish, sea turtles, manta rays and the occasional dolphin. We think this activity is well worth the detour, even for novice divers who want to discover the island’s seabed in complete safety.

What you will see

  • Colorful fish and varied marine fauna
  • Sea turtles and potentially manta rays
  • Underwater volcanic rock formations
  • Shipwrecks
  • See all diving options in Madeira – See all diving options

How much time should I allow?

A dive trip generally lasts between 2h30 and 4h, depending on your level and the number of dives planned. Introductory courses, supervised by instructors, are available without a certificate.

9. Madeira’s beaches

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Madeira's beaches

Why do we recommend this activity?

Madeira is not a beach destination in the traditional sense. The mountains plunge steeply into the sea. However, some beaches are worth a visit for their unique character. Seixal’s black sand beach is one of the most original. For golden sand, there are two imported beaches: Calheta and Machico, both very pleasant. If you’re looking for a long, sandy beach, we recommend a day trip to Porto Santo, whose beach stretches for 9km. In short, Madeira’s beaches have their own identity, different from the classic beaches of Southern Europe.

What you will see

  • Seixal: volcanic black sand beach, wild and spectacular setting
  • Calheta and Machico: two more classic beaches of imported golden sand
  • A few pebble beaches along the coast
  • Read our article on Madeira’s most beautiful beaches

How much time should I allow?

Half a day is enough for a beach. If you’re combining several beaches, you’ll need a day and a vehicle to get from one end of the island to the other easily.

10. Coasteering and cliff jumping

Best water and sea activities in Madeira - Coasteering and cliff jumping

Why do we recommend this activity?

Coasteering involves swimming, climbing and jumping from rocky shores into the sea. It’s the ideal activity for thrill-seekers who want to explore Madeira’s seaside in a different way. The island’s volcanic coastline, with its spectacular rock formations, is the perfect playground for this sport. We recommend this option for those who don’t mind getting wet and are looking for an off-the-beaten-track experience.

What you will see

  • The volcanic rock formations of Madeira’s coastline
  • Coves and sea caves accessible only from the water
  • Coastal views from the sea
  • Coasteering and cliff jumping in Madeira – See prices, photos and availability

How much time should I allow?

A coasteering session generally lasts between 2h30 and 3h30. No particular level is required, but you must be able to swim and not be afraid of heights. Professional guides are essential.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to go boating in Madeira?

The best period is from April to October. Water temperatures are milder, sea conditions more favorable and underwater visibility optimal. It’s also the ideal time to watch dolphins and whales. Having said that, Madeira enjoys a mild climate all year round, and most nautical activities can be enjoyed outside this window, thanks in particular to the presence of resident marine species, even in winter.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes, advance booking is highly recommended, especially in high season (July-August). Dolphin excursions dolphin watching and catamaran trips are often fully booked several days in advance. For activities such as surfing or coasteering, it’s also best to plan ahead to guarantee your slot.
