The historic and cultural heart of Funchal, we loved strolling through the old town with its cobbled streets, colorful facades and lively squares. This picturesque district is home to numerous places of interest, small boutiques, restaurants, bars and cafés. It is also the departure point for the Monte cable car.
Benefits:
- Good choice of hotels, restaurants and shops nearby.
- Cultural center: the main museums and other tourist attractions are concentrated here.

Staying west of the old town in the casino and port area, you’ll discover some of Madeira’s most luxurious accommodations. Many upscale hotels are located on rocky oceanfront escarpments. They offer breathtaking views over the Bay of Funchal that we won’t soon forget!
Benefits:

- Swimming: most beachfront hotels have private access to the ocean.

Stay in the Lido district (west of Funchal)
The Lido district stands out for its magnificent coastal promenade, its famous bathing complex with saltwater pools, and its direct access to the ocean. Despite its out-of-the-way location, it is well served by a reliable bus network to the city center and other parts of Madeira.
Benefits:
- Good choice of hotels, restaurants and shops nearby.
- Swimming: in addition to the hotels’ private beaches, the Lido bathing complex is highly regarded.
- Walking: the seafront promenade is very pleasant.
- Viewpoints: incredible views of the bay.
- Public transport: there are plenty of buses to get you quickly to the old town of Funchal.
Disadvantages:
- Very busy: you’ll mainly come across tourists.
- Less traditional: this area is relatively modern, so it doesn’t have the same cachet as the old town.
- Distance: allow at least 30min to reach the historic center on foot.
- Concrete beaches: not as comfortable as sandy beaches.

In the steep, picturesque streets to the north of the old town and casino district, you’ll discover perched hotels overlooking Funchal. Although far from the hustle and bustle of the city center, they have a quieter, more traditional atmosphere that we really appreciated.
Benefits:
- Quiet: these residential areas are quieter than the bustling city center.
- Authenticity: these neighborhoods offer a more local, less touristy atmosphere.
- Viewpoints: the hotels offer breathtaking panoramic views of Funchal and the ocean.
- Setting: some hotels are nestled in verdant settings.
- Transport: establishments generally offer a shuttle service for easy access to the city center.
Disadvantages:
- More limited range of hotels and restaurants.
- Distance: allow between 15min and 35min walk to reach the historic center and its downhill tourist attractions.
- Gradient: the alleyways are steep enough to walk up from the town center.
- Swimming: you’ll be far from the beaches, but hotels are generally equipped with swimming pools.

A veritable jewel of greenery nestled in the heights of Funchal, the Hotel Quinta Jardins do Lago seduced us with its magnificent garden and outdoor swimming pool topped by a bridge. It’s one of our favorite luxury establishments in Madeira. We were intoxicated by the beauty of the place and its peaceful atmosphere. Colorful climbing plants adorned the facade of the historic 18th-century building in which we stayed.
Our room had plenty of character, and a pleasant balcony overlooking the lush vegetation. We liked the decor, which retained the charm of the old days. Between the four-poster bed, the floral-patterned sofa, the paintings hanging on the walls in gilded frames, and the vintage décor elements, the room was truly authentic. In addition to the exceptional setting, you’ll enjoy the hotel’s top-of-the-range facilities. Fancy a sauna or jacuzzi session at the end of the day?

2. Reid’s Palace Hotel – A Belmond Hotel (5 stars)
Why stay there?
Both inside and out, the Reid’s Palace Hotel impressed us. Perched atop a cliff overlooking the Bay of Funchal, we couldn’t miss it! Its pink façade and lush garden overlook the ocean. As soon as we stepped inside, we fell under the spell of the reception area, with its ceiling moldings, majestic chandelier and geometrically patterned floor. Continuing our tour, we discovered the incredible terrace and its exceptional view. We were completely amazed by the view! Featuring elegantly decorated rooms and luxurious facilities, experience an enchanted interlude in this prestigious establishment that once welcomed Churchill! A temple of refinement, this hotel is also home to Restaurant William, which boasts 1 Michelin star.

Located in the Sao Martinho district west of the city center, this hotel offers an intimate, luxurious setting. It’s featured in our article on the best boutique hotels in Madeira! Offering a selection of 23 suites, it combines comfort, elegance and modernity. It also houses the Restaurant Avista, renowned for its gourmet Mediterranean cuisine.
Very well equipped, the establishment won us over with its exceptional view of the Atlantic Ocean. We could have stayed for long minutes, even hours, contemplating the landscape while reading a book. To relax, head for the spa area or 1 of the 3 Jacuzzis!

4. Three House apartment hotel (4 stars)
Why stay there?
The Three House apartment hotel totally won us over! It is one of our favorite establishments in Funchal. In addition to its central location, it boasts a magnificent rooftop with a bar and swimming pool. We spent a delightful time looking out over the city’s rooftops and the ocean, while sipping a cocktail with our feet in the water. At dusk, the sun’s reflections were reflected in the pool, making the scene all the more magical!
The apartments are fully equipped and, above all, tastefully decorated. The owner hunts for objects on his travels around the world to incorporate into his decor. We loved the concept! The kitchen appliances are by Smeg, bringing harmony to the room. We fell in love with this charming, unique and well-equipped apartment!

6. Castanheiro Boutique-Hotel (4 stars)
Why stay there?
Ideally located in the heart of Funchal’s historic center, the Castanheiro Boutique-Hotel won us over with its superb rooftop pool, bar and Jacuzzi. This is one of our favorite hotels in Funchal! We contemplated the 360° view over the city’s rooftops, while enjoying the hot tub. It was a particularly pleasant and relaxing moment. Are you tempted?
The Til Spa also won us over with its indoor pool featuring integrated seating and jets. The Tipografia Restaurant is on the first floor and is one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Throughout the establishment, the decor was elegant, highlighting the traditional architecture of the colorful buildings. Our room was particularly large, with 3 small balconies overlooking the street. We have very fond memories of our stay!

7. Hotel The Cliff Bay – PortoBay (5 stars)
Why stay there?
A luxury establishment, it is renowned for its unique location on a natural promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Enjoy breathtaking views over the bay. It is home to the famous Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant, which boasts 2 Michelin stars. In our opinion, this is one of the best restaurants in Funchal!
Recently renovated, the hotel offers tastefully decorated rooms, modern facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, a large spa area, and direct access to the sea. If you’re looking for comfort and relaxation, we highly recommend a stay here!

Ideally located in the heart of Funchal’s historic center, the hotel is within easy walking distance of the city’s main tourist attractions. You can also enjoy the lively atmosphere of the historic center.
During our stay, we particularly appreciated the size of the bed and the small balcony overlooking the alley. Our room combined comfort, sobriety and elegance. We loved the rooftop, with its bar and swimming pool. As you swim, you can admire the orange roofs of Madeira’s capital.

Why stay there?
Off-center from downtown Funchal, this hotel boasts a privileged coastal location. Its architecture took us by surprise! The main building is circular and multi-storey. It dominates the bay.
Between the huge outdoor pool, private ocean access, restaurant and other amenities, we loved staying here. Our room had a panoramic balcony. We fell asleep, lulled by the movement of the waves. This unique experience leaves us with an unforgettable memory! Although it’s a hotel chain, this establishment has some unique features that really set it apart from the rest.

10. Royal Savoy Hotel – Ocean Resort (5 stars)
Why stay there?
Offering breathtaking views over Funchal Bay, the Hotel Royal Savoy appealed to us for its private ocean access. Equipped with swimming goggles, we walked along the rocks lining the pontoon. This is a unique experience in Madeira, as there are very few beaches on the island.
As you wander through the palm-lined avenues, you’ll discover superb outdoor pools and remnants of fortifications. In this exotic setting, you can forget everyday worries while sipping a cocktail at the panoramic bar. From the balcony of our room, we contemplated the movement of the waves and the boats on the horizon. The room was spacious and traditionally decorated. Once night had fallen, the play of light created a cocooning, comforting atmosphere.

Why stay there?
Located on the west side of Funchal, The Views Baia Hotel dominates the city from above. As its name suggests, it offers breathtaking views over the rooftops of Madeira’s capital and the Atlantic Ocean. We were lucky enough to dine at Restaurant Desarma, located on the 11th floor of the building. This exceptional Michelin-starred restaurant boasts a unique setting with a long panoramic bay window.
This hotel features 238 rooms and suites, some with sea views, others with mountain views. They reflect the image of the establishment: modern and elegant. Top-of-the-range facilities like the outdoor pool and spa with Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and sauna invite you to relax and unwind. The perfect address for a rejuvenating vacation, whether you’re a couple or a group of friends!

We recommend that you stay at the Hotel Porto Santa Maria, one of our selection of the best adults-only establishments on the island. Its strategic location, on the seafront in the old town, will give you easy access to the must-do activities in Funchal. In fact, all you have to do is cross the seafront promenade to reach the Praia do Almirante Reis. Santiago Fortress is also less than a 5-minute walk away.

Before you even enter the building, take time to observe the façade and its innovative architecture. All curves, it’s very impressive! The plants fit in perfectly with the modern, elegant decor, while adding a touch of color.
All rooms and suites have balconies overlooking the Bay of Funchal. You’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the ocean, and wake up in a great mood! Magnificent views can also be enjoyed from the roof terrace, gardens and pools, including one on the rooftop. Why stay there?
Adjoining the Musée du Vin, known as Blandy’s Wine Lodge, this aparthotel is ideally located in the heart of the city. After a guided tour and wine tasting, it’s just a short walk to your accommodation. You’ll enjoy a spacious, fully-equipped apartment with a small balcony or a view of Funchal’s Municipal Garden, subject to availability.
Thanks to the practical, functional kitchen, you’ll save money on your meals. It’s an option we particularly recommend for families, to reduce the food budget. The homes have been restored to preserve the original architecture of the building, while integrating modern conveniences.
Blandy’s Wine Lodge
These apartments are located above Blandy’s Wine Lodge, next to thousands of liters of quality wines. We recommend a visit to the Wine Museum in Funchal. It’s one of the city’s must-do activities!

Reserved for adult customers, it guarantees calm and privacy thanks to its top-quality facilities. The Madeira Regency Cliff Hotel has 2 swimming pools and a relaxation area with massage tables. It has 59 rooms, all with balcony views. After a day’s sightseeing in Madeira’s capital, don’t hesitate to lounge by the pool or relax at the spa!
