Praia da Calheta is one of Madeira’s few sandy beaches. Situated in a tourist resort, it is surrounded by dykes for safer swimming. We particularly appreciated the 2 man-made coves, which offer the ideal setting for relaxing.
In this article, you’ll find our photos and tips on how to make the most of your time on the water!

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.
Is Praia da Calheta worth it?
Praia da Calheta is well worth a visit. In fact, it features in our article on Madeira’s most beautiful beaches! This fine sandy beach is a rarity on the island, making it a popular destination for visitors and locals alike. We were seduced by this quiet, protected bay, ideal for safe swimming. Inaugurated in 2004, this is Madeira’s first artificial beach.

Type of beach
Sand or no sand?
The beach floor is made up of fine yellow sand imported from Maroc. This feature makes it unique to Madeira, as the island is mostly pebble beaches. We found that a few small pebbles could also be mixed in with the sand, without disturbing the comfort of bathers.

Swimming conditions and supervision
Swimming conditions at Praia da Calheta are very good. The water is calm and protected by artificial barriers, creating a safe environment ideal for all swimmers. We particularly appreciated the gradual, gentle slope to enter the water, allowing even the smallest children to venture out with confidence.
The beach is supervised by lifeguards, providing additional safety for bathers. The water temperature is very pleasant, making the bathing experience even more enjoyable, even in the off-season.

Installations
Praia da Calheta is well-equipped for guests’ comfort. Public showers and toilets are available along the beach. We also noted the presence of deckchair and parasol rental services, so you can sit back and enjoy the island’s sunshine. Beach volleyball courts are also available.
