Climate in Madeira in February – weather forecast
In February, you’ll find that Madeira’s weather varies considerably whether you’re on the coast near the ocean or in the mountains. Close to the sea, you’ll enjoy mild, sunny days with a few clouds. In the higher elevations, however, you’ll find that the weather changes more quickly, with occasional rain and sometimes cool temperatures. This creates special microclimates! There’s also more wind at altitude.
On the coast
Close to the ocean, the climate is mild and pleasant. Days are often sunny, although cloudy periods can occur. Precipitation is moderate, with only 2 days of rain on average in February. You’ll see a few clouds in the sky, but it clears fairly quickly. You’ll feel a gentle breeze from time to time. This coastal climate justifies the island of Madeira’s nickname of “eternal spring”. Average temperatures will also allow you to enjoy outdoor activities.
In the heights
In the mountains, as we said earlier, the weather is more variable. Temperatures can change from cool to slightly warmer, with more frequent cloudy spells, especially at higher altitudes. This phenomenon is accentuated by the effects of winds, which can bring occasional downpours. If you’re planning a hike, be prepared for changing conditions and lower temperatures, with the risk of mist or low clouds. Remember to bring warm, waterproof clothing for these excursions.

In February, little snow falls on Madeira, but you may see snow on the island’s highest points, such as Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro. Nevertheless, you’ll notice that it sometimes only lasts a few hours. As a result, the traditional white layer doesn’t have time to form. On the coast, like Funchal, it never snows, with mild temperatures typical of the famous “eternal spring”, Madeira’s promise.
February winds in Madeira can be a little stronger than at other times of the year. With a fairly calm wind speed, there can be episodic gusts, especially in the mountains! The weather remains unpredictable, especially at altitude. Find out more if you plan to go hiking at this time of year. Read all our tips in our article on the best walks in Madeira.
Sunshine

The often cloudy skies limit sunlight. All coastal attractions remain accessible. Remember to check the weather conditions several times before you set off.
Water temperature – bathing in Madeira in February
If you’re dreaming of sandy beaches, coconut palms and warm water for swimming, Madeira isn’t the right destination, because it’s not a tropical island. On the other hand, if you can’t stand the heat and appreciate moderation, Madeira is the place for you! The climate is mild and pleasant all year round, and you can enjoy a wide range of activities and quiet bathing (because it’s less crowded!) in the natural pools or on the ocean beaches.

Crowds and other conditions
During the 1st half of February, tourist numbers in Madeira are relatively low, although a little higher than in January depending on the year. You can enjoy the sights without the summer crowds. Accommodation and flight prices are therefore often lower. However, remember that Funchal Carnival attracts curious visitors from all over the world, which can lead to a slight increase in prices and crowds. Indeed, the festivities begin before Carnival itself, which takes place from late February to early March. You can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, canyoning or kayaking, but remember to book well in advance to ensure you have plenty of choice. The restaurants also remain open, with a menu that can be adapted to suit the season. In tourist areas such as Funchal and Porto Santo, most of the best restaurants are open all year round.
Whale and dolphin watching
We also love Madeira because it’s one of Europe’s best destinations for watching dolphins, whales and other cetaceans! February is not the period when you’ll see the greatest diversity of species, but there are a few more than in January, including common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins and short-finned pilot whales. You may also be lucky enough to spot sperm whales and pilot whales. Bear in mind that sightings of these species depend on the weather and nature’s good will, making them sometimes uncertain or, on the contrary, full of surprises! Find all our useful tips and photos in our dedicated article!
Flowering
Note that if you choose Madeira for its flowering gardens, it’s best to visit in April or May. In February on the island of “eternal spring”, you can still admire a beautiful floral display despite the winter season. Gardens and landscapes are embellished by flowers such as camellias, magnolias and azaleas, which are starting to bloom. If you love orchids and bougainvillea. If you’re looking for places to marvel at unique floral species, head for the Madeira Botanical Garden or the Monte Palace Garden.
Canyoning, kayaking and outdoor activities
With its exceptional natural landscapes and mountain peaks, Madeira is an ideal playground for hiking, canyoning and kayaking enthusiasts. Beyond the breathtaking views we discovered, the outdoor activity experiences on the island are truly must-sees in our eyes. Good news: even in February, nature and adventure go hand in hand in Madeira. So you can try out all these activities with no worries. Don’t forget to bring your own equipment, opt for guided tours and ask the organizing teams for advice.
February events in Madeira
The 1st half of February is relatively calm in Madeira. From mid-month onwards, you’ll find that there are a number of events that attract tourists for a variety of reasons:
- Festa dos Compadres: the traditional Santana event that precedes and heralds the Carnival festivities. You can marvel at parades of giant figurines set to music. Experience dances and taste regional gastronomic specialties.
- Madeira Carnival: during the last week of February, Carnival is the most notable event of the month. Sublimely extravagant costumes, colorful floats and dancing to the rhythm of samba music will parade before you. Thousands of participants and spectators take to the streets of Funchal, also the following week, where masquerade costume is the dress code for all.
- Valentine’s Day: not an event specific to Madeira, but as a romantic island destination, it offers opportunities for 2-person getaways, candlelit dinners and couple’s activities in a beautiful setting surrounded by unique natural landscapes.
