While Funchal is home to some excellent adults-only hotels, the real nuggets of the island are hidden away from the capital, in our opinion. Nestled in verdant surroundings, these establishments guarantee a peaceful, serene stay, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. These oases of tranquillity, reserved exclusively for adults, do however require a vehicle. They are generally located in remote corners of the island, or difficult to reach by public transport. Whether you want to reach your hotel or explore Madeira at your leisure, we highly recommend renting a car during your stay!

1. Yeotown Health Retreat Hotel (Arco da Calheta)
Why stay there?
Overlooking Arco da Calheta, the Yeotown Health Retreat Hotel is truly secluded. It’s a haven of peace that respects the environment, where you can recharge your batteries 100%. We had to venture inland, taking very narrow streets uphill to reach it. However, we didn’t regret the detour. It’s one of our favourite boutique hotels in Madeira!
As you swim in its small outdoor pool, you’ll gaze out over the sumptuous natural landscape stretching all the way to the ocean. The accommodations are rather unusual, as they are set up in comfortable chalets. It’s a magical place with a special atmosphere. It invites you to relax and unwind. Here you can practice yoga and meditation. The establishment also offers wellness retreats.

2. Hotel Socalco Nature (La Calheta)
Why stay there?
Overlooking La Calheta, Hotel Socalco Nature offers rooms and apartments with kitchenette, nestled in atypical dwellings in the heart of a vineyard. You’ll enjoy a truly unique experience imagined by chef Octávio Freitas, whose ambition is to promote Madeira as a gastronomic destination. He runs Restaurant Desarma, our favorite Michelin-starred restaurant in Funchal.
We were very pleasantly surprised by the view of the resort and La Calheta Beach. This singular place is full of character! You’ll enjoy a variety of activities, including a visit to the organic garden, cooking classes and a hands-on workshop on probiotics. However, you should be aware that the establishment is rather difficult to access. The last stretch of road is really narrow and downhill. It’s not easy to turn around once you’ve reached the bottom. The hotel welcomes teenagers aged 16 and over.

Why stay there?
Nestled on a cliff with breathtaking ocean views, this hotel won us over with its exceptional setting! This renovated former quinta, nestled in lush gardens, perfectly combines traditional charm with sleek contemporary design. Elegant rooms, some with private balconies overlooking the sea, guarantee a peaceful, relaxing stay.
This 4-star establishment also boasts top-quality facilities: a panoramic outdoor pool, a spa with a heated indoor pool, and a bistronomic restaurant, among others. It has developed a complete high-end offering to meet its customers’ requirements. A choice address for those looking to recharge their batteries in the heart of an unspoilt natural setting, lulled by the gentle spray of the Atlantic!

4. Hotel Engenho Velho – Restaurante (Arco da Calheta)
Why stay there?
Located in Arco da Calheta, on the west coast of Madeira Island, this recent establishment was built on the site of a former sugar refinery. It offers a pleasant setting for your stay, with just 10 modern, comfortable rooms. As its name suggests, it is home to the renowned Restaurant Engenho Velho, which serves top-quality local cuisine.
This human-scale hotel is very peaceful. We loved the outdoor pool with its direct ocean view! We found our room particularly spacious, and it even had a charming little balcony. We couldn’t get enough of the view!

Are you looking for well-located adults-only accommodation in Madeira’s capital? We recommend staying at the Hotel Porto Santa Maria. Its strategic location, on the seafront in the old town, gives you easy access to Funchal’s must-do activities. In fact, all you have to do is cross the seafront promenade to reach the Praia do Almirante Reis. Santiago Fortress is also less than a 5-minute walk away.
Exclusively for adults, this 4-star establishment cultivates the art of well-being. It boasts top-of-the-range facilities, including an outdoor and indoor swimming pool, a restaurant and a relaxation area. It’s the perfect place to relax and let go! As its name suggests, it offers breathtaking views over the rooftops of Madeira’s capital and the Atlantic Ocean. We were lucky enough to dine at Restaurant Desarma, located on the 11th floor of the building. This exceptional Michelin-starred restaurant boasts a unique setting with a long panoramic bay window.
This hotel features 238 rooms and suites, some with sea views, others with mountain views. They reflect the image of the establishment: modern and elegant. Top-of-the-range facilities like the outdoor pool and spa with Jacuzzi, Turkish bath and sauna invite you to relax and unwind. The perfect address for a rejuvenating vacation, whether you’re a couple or a group of friends!

Boasting a privileged seafront location, this cliffside hotel offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s relatively far from downtown Funchal, and benefits from the quieter atmosphere of the Lido district. It’s a place we particularly like for its sunset strolls along the ocean.
Reserved for adult customers, it guarantees calm and privacy thanks to its top-quality facilities. The Madeira Regency Cliff Hotel has 2 swimming pools and a relaxation area with massage tables. It has 59 rooms, all with balcony views. After a day’s sightseeing in Madeira’s capital, don’t hesitate to lounge by the pool or relax at the spa!

You’ll be seduced by its perched swimming pool, which offers a breathtaking panorama of the island’s coastline. There’s also a bar and Jacuzzi overlooking the city.
The relaxation area includes a second swimming pool, sauna, hammam and massage tables. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with ocean or mountain views. A choice destination for a rejuvenating vacation, with the more relaxed pace of Madeira.
