We love Madeira in January because the island enjoys a mild climate, often referred to as “eternal spring”, with temperatures around 17°C to 19°C. There are about 2 rainy days a month and 5 hours of sunshine a day. Although it’s not the sunniest time of year, as Madeira is not a tropical destination, it’s a good time to visit, enjoy nature and escape the winter cold. You’ll also avoid the tourist crowds!

Temperatures
Temperatures are pleasant. The thermometer averages 17°C (63°F) to 19°C (66°F). The “calima”, an occasional episode of warm wind, can add a few degrees, but the effect is not as great as on the Canary Islands.
Water temperatures
At this time of year, the water temperature in Madeira varies between 17.5°C (63.5°F) and 20°C (68°F), with an average of around 18.7°C. In other words, the sea can be cool and this may not be suitable for everyone. A light wetsuit may be useful if necessary.
Crowds and prizes
January is considered low season in Madeira, so you won’t have too many tourists at that time. We enjoy the mild temperatures and pleasant climate. These conditions still attract some visitors, especially those hoping to avoid the summer crowds. This makes the cost of stays more affordable.
Opening conditions
In Madeira, everything is open in January: attractions, hotels, restaurants… Some accommodations may reduce their range of services or close some outdoor facilities such as swimming pools. Most restaurants, museums and other facilities are within easy reach, especially in tourist areas like Funchal. Some seasonal establishments may be closed, but you’ll still have plenty of choice in January.

You’ll notice that the weather varies a lot in Madeira between the coast near the ocean and the mountains. In January, Madeira’s climate is mild and frequently sunny along the coast, while the higher ground is cooler and more changeable.
On the coast
Close to the ocean, especially in Funchal, you’ll enjoy a mild, pleasant climate. Days are often sunny, although cloudy periods can occur. Precipitation is moderate, with only 1 or 2 rainy days in the month. The sky will be cloudy at times but relatively clear. You’ll feel a bit of wind, creating a pleasant breeze. This coastal climate justifies the island of Madeira’s nickname of “eternal spring”. Average temperatures will also allow you to enjoy outdoor activities.
In the heights
In the mountains, you’ll find that the weather is more variable. You can expect cooler temperatures in January, and they can change quickly! Although the day may start out sunny, clouds and showers may punctuate the following hours, especially at higher altitudes. This phenomenon is accentuated by the effects of winds, which can bring sporadic rainfall. If you plan to hike, be prepared for changing conditions and lower temperatures. There is also a risk of mist or low cloud. We recommend you bring warm, waterproof clothing for these excursions.

In Madeira in January, depending on whether you’re at the water’s edge or inland, rainfall can reach 30 to 67mm in a month.

At this time of year, snow is rare, but you may catch a glimpse of it on the island’s highest points, such as Pico Ruivo and Pico do Arieiro. However, you’ll notice that it usually only lasts a few hours. As a result, the traditional white layer doesn’t have time to form. On the coast, like Funchal, it never snows, with mild temperatures typical of the famous “eternal spring”, Madeira’s promise.
Winds are generally moderate, blowing mainly from the east and northeast. At higher altitudes, the wind can be stronger without being violent. Find out more if you plan to go hiking at this time of year. Outdoor activities are still possible, as conditions are often comfortable, but it’s important to check the weather forecast beforehand. Opt for the Madeiraweather app (less than €1), which provides weather forecasts for the Arieiro and Ruivo summits, for example.
Sunshine
In January, you’ll enjoy around 5h to 7h of sunshine, for days of around 10h between sunrise and sunset. The sky could be cloudy with a little more limited sunlight. There are plenty of places to visit, as everything remains open. Just be sure to anticipate sunset when you set off on your hikes, as the region is ideal for them.
Water temperature – bathing in Madeira in January
Madeira is not the ideal destination for those who dream of fine sand, but you can still enjoy pleasant natural spots for relaxing, soaking and sunbathing. Summer is the period with the highest temperatures (but also the biggest crowds), so it’s ideal for swimming. However, the ocean around Madeira is quite deep. As the area is not tropical, temperatures are fairly stable in all seasons, including winter. On the island, you can also enjoy natural swimming pools all year round.

Crowds and other conditions
Be aware that January is not a busy tourist season, as it is considered low season. However, many people may want to escape the cold northern hemisphere winter.
In January, Madeira attracts a growing number of tourists thanks to its mild, sunny climate, ideal for escaping the rigors of the European winter. Indeed, most places remain open and outdoor activities are possible, such as hiking or biking to take advantage of the magnificent scenery while avoiding the crowds. January is still a good time to visit, as the weather on the Flower Island, with its “eternal spring” almost all year round, ensures a mild, pleasant climate. Note, however, that seasonal establishments may close or restrict access to certain facilities in January, such as outdoor swimming pools. With fewer visitors, rates are also lower.
To avoid the crowds even in January, you can choose to visit Madeira in a different way. So there are still some “secret” places where you’ll find fewer people.

Whales and dolphins in Madeira
Did you know that Madeira is one of Europe’s top destinations for watching dolphins, whales and other cetaceans? Imagine sailing off the coast of the island when suddenly a pod of dolphins appears from the waves! How can you not marvel at the beauty of this aquatic ballet and rediscover your inner child? Observing these marine wonders in January is quite possible, even if it’s not the most favorable period for a wide variety of species. At this time of year, for example, you can see common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and short-finned pilot whales. It’s less common, but you may be lucky enough to spot adult sperm whales. Flowering
Although Madeira owes its famous nickname of flower island to its magical, colorful spring in April and May, it’s also possible to see them in winter. In January, Madeira’s gardens are just as attractive thanks to a subtropical climate. You’ll see iconic flowers like birds of paradise (or Strelitzia), agapanthus and Christmas stars (or Poinsettias) in full bloom, with a beautiful palette of colors. If you’re looking for places to marvel at unique floral species, head for the Madeira Botanical Garden or the Monte Palace Garden. January is also an ideal time to discover the island’s natural beauty.

Madeira remains a lively island in January, with a number of events to mark the start of the New Year:
- New Year’s Eve: the end of the Christmas and New Year celebrations continues into January, with illuminations and cultural shows. Funchal’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display is quite famous.
- Madeira Hiking Festival: for 5 days, guided hikes are organized on the island’s most popular trails, suitable for all levels of experience.

In January, however, tourist numbers are lower, especially at the beginning of the month. Prices, especially for accommodation and transport, are therefore lower.
