Nestled in the heart of Funchal’s Monte district, the Jardin Public de Monte, also known as Parc Leite Monteiro, covers 26,000 m². We enjoyed discovering its native and exotic plant species. It’s ideal for a stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Enjoy the trails and peaceful atmosphere. It offers the perfect setting for a rejuvenating break.
Here are some useful tips for planning your visit to the Jardin Public de Monte in Funchal, Madeira.

This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.
Is a visit to Monte’s Public Garden worthwhile?
Yes! The Jardin Municipal do Monte is a charming public garden located in the town of Monte on the heights of Funchal, just below the famous church (which is very photogenic).
This small garden offers an oasis of greenery and tranquillity, perfect for a relaxing stroll.
We took the time to stroll through this marvellous shade of green during our visit to the Monte district!
This is one of Madeira’s most beautiful gardens!

What you can see
Native and exotic plant species
We enjoyed strolling the paths of this 2.6-hectare garden. In particular, we spotted beautiful tree ferns, reminiscent of those found along the Levada do Moinho, which runs through the Laurisilva Forest.
We also loved the colorful flowers that cheerfully punctuate the verdant landscape and add a romantic touch to this peaceful setting.

Century-old trees
During your visit, keep an eye out for several hundred-year-old trees lurking along the paths! We love to cross paths with these witnesses to the past, who remain among us despite all the transformations taking place in their environment.

Pleasant paths paved with basalt pebbles
Some of the paths through the park are paved with small basalt pebbles. We liked this nod to Madeira’s volcanic origins. It reminded us of our journey along one of Madeira’s most beautiful hikes: the Ponta de Sao Louranço, Madeira’s volcanic tail.

A stream that flows peacefully through the park
We loved the subtle sound of water as it cradled our visit to Monte’s Public Garden. The stream that runs through the garden runs alongside volcanic rocks, adding to the lush atmosphere of this little green spot in Funchal.

An engraving of the Carreiros do Monte
Do you know Carreiros do Monte? Also known as the Funchal Toboggans, this is a picturesque means of transport consisting of wicker sleds mounted on wooden runners, guided by two men called“carreiros “. These sleighs, which originated in the early 19th century, were initially used as the main means of transport between Funchal and Monte, before the arrival of the cable car.

While visiting the park, we came across an engraving depicting a carreiro in action. In fact, their stand is located at the foot of the Jardin Municipal de Monte. If you’d like to try out this unusual means of transport, you’ll find more information here.

Church of Our Lady of Monte
Above Monte Park, you’ll find the Church of Our Lady of Monte. Built in the 18th century, it is the island’s most important pilgrimage site.
We liked its black and white facade, another reminder of Madeira’s volcanic origins. Its grand staircase gives it a majestic air. Once at the top, turn around and enjoy the view over the city.

We also appreciated its cheerful, colorful interior. The Church of Our Lady of Monte is richly decorated: gilding, paintings, stone, wood… A warm mix of materials, colors and ornaments, faithful to Portuguese religious buildings.
