This opinion is completely independent, based on our experiences. We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.
Is a visit to Funchal’s 3D Art Museum (fun) worthwhile?
In our opinion, this establishment is well worth a visit. In fact, it features in our selection of the city’s best museums. We enjoyed this fun and creative activity, which can be enjoyed by several people. Whether you come with family or friends, you’ll share a convivial moment full of humor in this unusual venue.
It offers an original museum experience thanks to its trompe-l’œil decors and optical illusions. His varied stagings, ranging from everyday settings to fantastical worlds, allow visitors to literally enter the paintings.
What you can see
Zany staging
During your visit, you’ll discover some of the most original scenographies in the world. You’ll be able to hold a tyrannosaurus on a leash, or get out of a shark’s mouth! You’ll plunge into paintings that come to life under your gaze. Get ready to get creative and put on a show! Your children will pose and become the heroes of fantastic scenes!
Optical illusions
We were completely mesmerized by the optical illusions on display at the museum. Tell us, do you also feel that the image comes alive before your eyes? Even if we concentrate, we can’t stop the movement completely, only slow it down!
OUR TIPS FOR RENTING YOUR CAR AT Madeira
- Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
- Take a car with a good engine for hilly roads, but not too big for manoeuvring.
- There’s plenty of demand and few cars, so book early.
A wall of wacky expressions
On a wall in the museum, we discovered plaques with unusual and funny expressions. For example, did you know that it was impossible to sneeze with your eyes open? Or that noses and ears are the only 2 parts of our bodies that never stop growing? We even learned that chewing gum while peeling an onion would prevent you from crying. We’re very curious to try out this tip!
Mirrors that multiply reflections
Mirrors are widely used in illusion. They enable reflections to be split and multiplied. We had the disconcerting experience of facing multiple versions of ourselves around a table. You’ll be looking at yourself from all angles, which is pretty disturbing!
An inverted room
In the upside-down room, the laws of gravity are turned upside down. As we clung to the chair, our feet were drawn to the ceiling! This room challenges our perceptions of reality.
Fun games
During your visit, you’ll try out a number of games that will challenge your perceptions. These fun, interactive experiences will plunge you into a world where reality meets illusion, stimulating your mind and awakening your curiosity!

3D Fun Art Museum in Funchal (Madeira): access
Where is the Museum of Illusion?
- On the island of Madeira,
- In the capital, Funchal,
- In the old town,
- At 24 Rua do Surdo.
Access by car and parking
We do not recommend driving in the old town. The streets are narrow and cobbled. Some are even one-way. Choose a parking lot outside the historic center, such as Parking Santa Luzia. It is open from 6am to 10pm on weekdays. Then simply walk down Rua 5 de Outubro to reach Old Funchal. The museum is just a 7-minute walk from this parking lot.
For the more adventurous, there are a few paying parking spaces in the museum alley.
Public transport access
There are several bus stops on Rua 5 de Outubro near the museum, including lines 70, 60, 13, 17 and 20. Find out more here.
Visiting difficulties
The museum is partially accessible to people with reduced mobility. It has a sofa area to sit on, but we didn’t see an elevator and there are stairs.
If you’d like to visit it on your own, you can rent a tripod at the reception desk to take photos with the right perspective and distance.

Best moment
This activity is very popular with families visiting Funchal, so we recommend avoiding peak periods. We recommend you visit us as soon as we open in the morning, or at the end of the day. The museum is also open at lunchtime. More generally, we recommend that you visit us outside the summer months (July and August) and school vacations.
Direction of visit
There’s no set direction for the visit, but the scenographies follow on from one another. Along the way, you’ll stop to immortalize the most intriguing settings, choosing from a multitude of backdrops the ones that pique your interest the most! Markers on the ground will show you where to position yourself to take your photos from the best possible perspective.
Visiting with children
We highly recommend this visit to families looking for fun and entertainment. Young and old alike will have fun taking extraordinary photos and putting themselves on stage! We came away with some really funny, offbeat shots. In fact, it’s one of Funchal’s must-do family activities!
