We found the route well signposted and easy to follow. Free parking is available at the end of the road, near the traffic circle. Total duration can vary between 3 and 5 hours, depending on your pace and how much time you spend admiring the scenery. Indeed, as hiking is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/best-things-to-do-madeira-attractions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main activities on Madeira<\/a>, the <em>Ponta de Sao Louren\u00e7o<\/em> is quite popular. The trail can be quite busy, which is not very pleasant. We prefer to walk in the calm before the crowds and the heat arrive. It&#8217;s not hard to spot it in this arid landscape with little vegetation. From then on, you&#8217;ll be able to admire magnificent landscapes. The basaltic rock contrasting with the blue ocean offers a typical Madeira landscape. We walked early in the morning and had the trail almost entirely to ourselves. The calm that reigns on this almost deserted peninsula before the hikers arrive is very pleasant. Make your way to <em>Casa do Sardinha<\/em>. This small caf\u00e9-snack is a welcome stop on the course. We were impressed by the spectacular view of the peninsula&#8217;s &#8220;tail&#8221; stretching out into the ocean. This unique geological formation is the result of multiple volcanic eruptions that have shaped exceptional basalt and limestone formations. The final climb is a little steep, but the 360\u00b0 panoramas awaiting you at the summit are well worth the effort.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Ponta-Sao-Louranco\/Hike\/i-X3X6p6D\/0\/KkFmB4LZJ9VVsXPHqtdtvNBhVmxbvqDpkJfDmr7QT\/L\/Ponta_do_Furado_Ponta_de_Sao_Louranco_hike_Madeira-7130415-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta de S&#xE3;o Louren&#xE7;o hike PR8 - Miradouro Ponta do Furado\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take time to observe the landscape:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the first islet to emerge to the west is<em>Ilheu de Agostinho<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the middle, the rock formation that appears to form a &#8220;hump&#8221; is the<em>Ilheu do Desembarcadouro<\/em>. We learned that it was used to grow <em>Cevada<\/em> (cereal), as a grazing area for cattle and as an anchorage for pirates!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just behind it, you should see the <strong>S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o lighthouse<\/strong>, which has stood proudly on<em>Ilheu de Farol<\/em> since the 17th century! This was the first lighthouse built in Madeira.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the weather is clear, you should be able to see <strong>the <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/islands-desertas-madeira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Desertas Islands<\/a> silhouetted<\/strong> on the eastern horizon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Ponta-Sao-Louranco\/Hike\/i-gt75zGg\/0\/MhxnRsQFcLkCsLKhRdw5LHwpx7hqQRMf7hf8pfKRN\/L\/Ponta_do_Furado_Ponta_de_Sao_Louranco_hike_Madeira-7130416-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta de S&#xE3;o Louren&#xE7;o hike PR8 - Miradouro Ponta do Furado\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sao Louren\u00e7o Point with its lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back: a last look at the desert peninsula<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The return journey offers a different perspective on this unique peninsula. From the <em>Miradouro Ponta do Furado<\/em> you can see all the way from the start of the trail to the end of the peninsula. To return to the starting point, you can choose to take the same path as on the outward journey (the one on the south-facing slope) or the one further north. It makes a loop and then rejoins the main trail. It&#8217;s a great way to discover new landscapes. Note that the trail on the north side has a slightly steeper gradient.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Ponta-Sao-Louranco\/Hike\/i-jpp6zQb\/0\/NLfSpDqDXQCzWg5mZGcs48kQszxXvsWz23DShXpwf\/XL\/Ponta_do_Furado_Ponta_de_Sao_Louranco_hike_Madeira-8482-XL.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta de S&#xE3;o Louren&#xE7;o PR8 - View of the peninsula\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the top of the promontory, we were struck by the contrast between the semi-arid climate of the area, swept by northerly winds, and the sparse vegetation clinging to it. A landscape that contrasts sharply with Madeira&#8217;s generally green landscapes, especially along the <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/best-levadas-madeira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">famous Levadas<\/a>. This magnificent viewpoint, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/best-viewpoints-madeira-miradouros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most beautiful on the island<\/a>, is well worth a visit. Here are our tips for visiting it:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go there when the day is bright, and the colors will be more vibrant. Indeed, in the early morning, the sun hides behind the cliffs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk a few metres past the main viewpoint.
