We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Madeira in 5 days: what you need to know<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Essential tips<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plan your itinerary by half-day whenever possible. Check the weather forecast and adapt your activities accordingly, as conditions can vary from one side of the island to the other due to the central mountains.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Even though the island is small, mountain roads can slow down your travels, so don&#8217;t overload your days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The paths along the levadas are narrow, so we recommend setting off at dawn to avoid the crowds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the driving times, to give you a better idea of how to plan your itinerary:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Map-Driving-times-Madeira-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Map Driving times Madeira\" class=\"wp-image-1207\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need a car?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 5 days, we strongly recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/renting-car-madeira-tips-experiences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renting a car<\/a>, in order to..:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>adapt to the weather<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stop at all the viewpoints (miradouros)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>watch the sunrise or sunset<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>more freedom to explore your favorite places<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t worry, <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/driving-madeira-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">driving<\/a> is not as difficult as some people make it out to be. Walk for 1 hour, then turn around.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Pico-do-Arieiro\/Pico-Areiro-hike-return\/i-BwGtd4k\/1\/FXHTZPjQJrWcFTdr2NLLxBGLLZRjB3PFR7jqbBCLZ\/L\/Pico_areiro_hike_Madeira-9512-L.jpg\" alt=\"Pico do Arieiro hike\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop 2 &#8211; Traditional Santana houses<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then head down to the north coast.<br\/>First stop in Santana to see the traditional Santana houses. These are iconic triangular buildings with thatched roofs and bright colors. These houses date back to the early days of Madeira&#8217;s colonization and illustrate traditional agricultural architecture.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Madeira\/13e-Santana-Houses-park\/i-RT8wMSm\/2\/87852138\/L\/Traditional_Santana_houses_Madeira-7241293-L.jpg\" alt=\"Traditional Santana houses\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop 3 &#8211; View of Rocha do Navio<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then discover one of our favorite panoramas.<br\/>Enjoy the view from the top of the cable car: green mountains falling into the deep blue sea.<br\/>Unfortunately, the cable car is currently inaccessible to tourists, but we hope it will reopen. If so, take the time to go down to see the waterfalls and farms at the foot of the cliffs.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Rocha-do-Navio\/i-7VB4j2Q\/1\/CqZDrfT9bWpRdf7R5fwQNwrVd3KFznH6PrGx2HPrb\/L\/Roacha_do_Navio_cable_car_Madeira-7241165-L.jpg\" alt=\"Rocha do Navio\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop 4 &#8211; Ponta de Sao Louren\u00e7o<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And to end the day on a high note, head for the northeastern tip, where you&#8217;ll discover landscapes perfect for admiring Madeira&#8217;s volcanic origins.<br\/>The hike takes you along Madeira&#8217;s famous &#8220;dragon&#8217;s tail&#8221;, surrounded by barren landscapes and colorful rocks.<br\/>You can walk as far as you like, then turn around. Impressive and colorful!<br\/>The whole hike is 6.4 km\/4mi, which means 3 to 4 hours to the Sardinha Caf\u00e9 and back.<br\/>Find out more about the hike (article coming soon).<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Ponta-Sao-Louranco\/Hike\/i-dQTR8F6\/0\/DrnJnMN3GZtjDWxhNQ5W3NxzGqZrDmwsZwGvxnW8L\/L\/Ponta_de_Sao_Louranco_Madeira-7130340-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta de Sao Louren&#xE7;o\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop 5 &#8211; Ponta do Rosto<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before setting off again, we recommend a short detour to admire the view from <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/miradouro-ponta-do-rosto-madeira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ponta do Rosto<\/a> of the volcanic cliffs at the tail of Madeira. What a contrast to the rest of the island!<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Travel\/Madeira\/2b-Ponta-do-Rosto\/i-r74VZz4\/2\/CHdcmfWr5txLz6JbJTDDZRMV7cj2czhJFMZ8JHKkF\/L\/Ponta_do_rosto_Madeira-8500-L.jpg\" alt=\"Ponta do Rosto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Day 3: Cabo Girao, Camara de Lobos and garden<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stop 1 &#8211; Cabo Girao<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to Cabo Girao at opening time to avoid the biggest crowds.<br\/>Here, you step onto a platform to experience the vertigo at the top of these cliffs, which reach 589m (1932ft). Madeira&#8217;s most famous.<br\/>He&#8217;s considered the most charming, and I agree. Promenades offering different views surround the tiny fishing port with its colorful boats. Take time to discover the jewels of the Monte district: the Notre-Dame de Monte church and its impressive staircase. And, surprisingly, it&#8217;s the burial place of the exiled Austrian Emperor Charles I.<br\/>Then, below the church, don&#8217;t miss Monte&#8217;s small but charming municipal garden. At an altitude of 550 m, it is home to century-old trees and native species. You can go hiking, or just admire the trees near the parking lot.<br\/>This is the Unesco natural heritage site of the Laurissilva forest. You&#8217;ll discover rolling meadows and twisting trees. It&#8217;s absolutely enchanting. Even more so if the forest is shrouded in mist!<br\/>The island and much of southern Europe were once covered by this native forest. And we recommend a stop at Ribeira da Janela. The lava pools, with their huge arch, are well worth a visit. This is one of the island&#8217;s few natural sandy beaches. Hiking trails run alongside them. exploring Madeira&#8217;s southwest coast.<br\/>Here you&#8217;ll find charming villages such as <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-village-jardim-do-mar-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jardim do Ma<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-village-paul-do-mar-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul do Mar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/things-to-do-village-madalena-do-mar-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madalena do Mar<\/a>.<br\/>In
