We made our own choices, visited the area anonymously, and paid our bills in full.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"tab-con-4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving in Madeira: What you need to know<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you don&#8217;t want to read the whole article, at least read this short summary of the essential points to know:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We ride on the <strong>right side<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seat <strong>belts<\/strong> are mandatory for all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Speed<\/strong> limits are clearly indicated in red circles.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are many <strong>tunnels<\/strong> on the island<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are some very <strong>easy<\/strong> fast routes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Off these roads, driving is<strong> not as difficult<\/strong> as people tend to write. It&#8217;s true that the roads are narrower, winding and sometimes steep. Rent the right car in Madeira<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To make driving easier, it&#8217;s best to choose a car adapted to the type of road and conditions. Know the rules of conduct<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Permit requirements<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To drive in Madeira\/Portugal, you need a valid driving license from your country.<br\/>If you have a valid driver&#8217;s license, with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a license number,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a photo,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a validity date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>written in Latin letters,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you don&#8217;t need an international permit.<br\/>Otherwise, you&#8217;ll need an international permit as well.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Age<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minimum driving age is 18.  <br\/>But be aware that many car rental agencies may have other age requirements, often 21 and 1 year&#8217;s driving license minimum.  <br\/>You must also carry your vehicle registration documents and a valid form of identification, such as your passport, with you at all times.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">General rules<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Madeira, you drive on the right-hand side of the road.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seat belts mandatory for all<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No cell phones while driving<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Headphones are forbidden<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children under 12 are not allowed to sit in the front of the car.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Driving\/i-zGRQGbD\/1\/Lcj6JnDgt72s5kJ64RGWkcBXZ3Lj8GrvShGw2vCRj\/L\/driving_Madeira-8863-L.jpg\" alt=\"road between mountain and sea\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alcohol and driving<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alcohol limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood. Preparing for different types of road<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main roads<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/best-towns-madeira-villages\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">major cities<\/a>, there are mostly expressways with many tunnels. They are in good condition.<br\/>The outings are clearly indicated in advance.<br\/>No difficulties.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Driving\/i-V5jvPxq\/1\/NVJNnrnczbnDVzRHQcKC6h5CgPX5fwzt4V6gZ9gQg\/L\/driving_tunnel_Madeira-7130599-L.jpg\" alt=\"main road to Funchal with tunnel\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mountain roads<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get anywhere else, you have to take the narrower, more winding mountain roads.<br\/>On the whole, they&#8217;re not difficult, just winding.<br\/>They have one lane in each direction, and always a low wall on the empty side.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a few roads are really narrow, often in the last 2 km, often to reach a specific destination.  <br\/>We took three single-lane roads. There are passages where other vehicles can pass. The longest was 2.5 km to Parque Floresta das Queimadas.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Driving\/i-XXdSpvC\/1\/Kf8ZwWXwQJBfSvRzBDfcJTzV2GwWh5R9hPpm3VB4D\/L\/driving_Madeira-7130792-L.jpg\" alt=\"narrower road\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Madeira&#8217;s steepest roads<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest challenge in Madeira is the few steep roads above Funchal. They are mainly located in the hills above Funchal.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this sounds scary, check out the location of your home. Most towns outside Funchal are not large.<br\/>You can park and explore on foot.<br\/>In some villages, the roads can be quite narrow. Understanding signs and tolls<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speed limits<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The speed limits are indicated on circular signs with a red border and a number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speed limits are expressed in kilometers per hour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 30 and 50km\/h in residential areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They vary very frequently on roads outside residential areas, even in the middle of the tunnel.
