Old Funchal combines authenticity and heritage. You&#8217;ll love getting lost in this maze of narrow cobbled streets, each more charming than the last.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The historic center is marked by Manueline and Baroque influences, testimony to the Portuguese heritage that is omnipresent in the old buildings of Madeira&#8217;s capital. We also spotted some splendid decorative azulejos during our visit. These are earthenware tiles adorned with colorful paint used to decorate monuments. Walls, doors and facades have been decorated by local artists in a variety of styles. From street art to trompe-l&#8217;\u0153il and azulejos, it&#8217;s a colorful artistic journey!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pedestrian thoroughfare is just a few metres from the Mercado dos Lavradores, literally the Farmers&#8217; Market. We suggest you combine these 2 visits. We loved wandering between the market&#8217;s stalls of exotic fruits and colorful flowers. Some of the saleswomen were even dressed in traditional costumes, making the experience all the more authentic. Located in the lower part of the building, we discovered the famous fish and shellfish market. Between the azulejos, gilded sculptures, sculpted altarpieces and works of Sacred Art that bear witness to the splendor of the period, you&#8217;ll find no shortage of details to observe. This religious monument offers a remarkable insight into Portuguese Baroque art and the imprint left by the Jesuits on Funchal. It is divided into 3 exhibition areas: the Casa de Entrada, the Casa de Cal\u00e7ada, and the Casa dos Azulejos. We particularly liked the Casa de Cal\u00e7ada, tastefully furnished and decorated, which lets you project yourself into another era. The Casa dos Azulejos&#8217; glass roof and terrace overlooking Funchal also won us over! It&#8217;s divided into several houses, with narrow passageways and very small rooms. We liked it for its splendid goldsmith&#8217;s work, colorful walls and richly decorated ceiling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>St. Peter&#8217;s Church:<\/strong> inside the building, you&#8217;ll see superb earthenware tiles covering the walls and majestic chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Igreja de Santa Maria Maior (Socorro)<\/strong>: the island&#8217;s oldest parish church, located on the seafront facing the Atlantic Ocean. We loved wandering around in this wonderful shade of green!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Funchal Botanical Garden: <\/strong>located in the Bom Successo Estate, it houses an impressive collection of tropical and subtropical plants from all over the world. We particularly liked the colourful flower mosaic!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/visit-quinta-imperador-gardens-funchal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quinta Jardins do Imperador<\/a>:<\/strong> this wilder natural area is home to an old manor house with a slightly faded fa\u00e7ade and a cannon. Bordered by the ocean, Funchal boasts a number of pleasant bathing areas:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Praia Formosa: <\/strong>this is the largest beach to the west of Funchal, and overall one of the largest on the island. The cove is covered with large grey pebbles and black sand, making it easy to reach the water. It features in <a href=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/en\/best-beaches-madeira\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our selection of Madeira&#8217;s most beautiful beaches<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Praia do Almirante Reis:<\/strong> not the prettiest or most pleasant, but the most central and convenient if you&#8217;re visiting downtown Funchal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Praia de S\u00e3o Tiago:<\/strong> this small concrete beach is hidden below the S\u00e3o Tiago Fortress. We particularly recommend the Pra\u00e7a CR7 parking lot, which is open all day except Sundays. Located to the west of the city center below the CR7 Museum, you&#8217;ll avoid the narrow, cobbled streets of the historic district. Some are even one-way. You&#8217;ll also avoid potential traffic jams at the start and end of the day.
