The Pico Ana Ferreira rock formation is the highest point in western Porto Santo. The summit reaches an altitude of 288m. It stands 118m above sea level<br\/>It&#8217;s a geological site of national interest.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These clearly cut basalt columns are impressive.<br\/>When you&#8217;re up against the wall, you feel so small! First on a path, then climbing rock walls.<br\/>It&#8217;s essential to wear good shoes that can grip the rock, and be aware that the slope is quite steep. Those who suffer from vertigo will have some difficulty.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Porto-Santo\/7e-Cave\/i-sn3RM5j\/2\/FPpjTfSzrn3LhSPStkddrQsJb2RKjV2R2qCCVdGdX\/L\/Cave_Porto_Santo-7183776-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no signs to tell you when to leave the path and explore the rocks. Keep your eyes peeled for the cave in the distance.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the place is worth the effort. It&#8217;s fun enough to see it from the outside, this little opening under a dome of rock. Excitement builds as we approach.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/photos.smugmug.com\/Madeira-Lovers\/Porto-Santo\/7e-Cave\/i-XfKQxbJ\/2\/MnKhD8qPZm5JRpPPxxRrXkntbtGbxtCJcj3dNPPz\/L\/Cave_Porto_Santo-7183777-L.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once inside, you&#8217;ll discover one of Porto Santo&#8217;s most famous views.<br\/>You can see the entire center of the island and the mountains to the east.<br\/>The colors are magnificent, with a touch of green for the golf course in the foreground and variations of blue in the sea.<br\/>The view from outside is the same, but having a rocky setting all around makes the panorama even more spectacular.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s perfectly aligned for sunrise in the window. Climb above the cave and continue to the highest point.  <br\/>Beware, you&#8217;re on a ridge with slippery rocks, so this is for experienced hikers only.<br\/>At the summit, you can see the crest of this rock formation a little more clearly and enjoy additional views towards the west of the island.<br\/>There are also other caves on the south face of the ridge.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;re sorry, but we don&#8217;t have any photos because I&#8217;m afraid of heights (Claire, the traveler).<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pico Ana Ferreira: access<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to find Pico Ana Ferreira<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Western half of Porto Santo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access over the last few hundred metres on a bumpy track from the road.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From the port = 10 min drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From Ponta da Calheta = 10 min drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Here is a map to help you find your way:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/madeiralovers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/map-Pico-Ana-Ferreira-Porto-Santo-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Pico Ana Ferreira Porto Santo map\" class=\"wp-image-1726\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map: Pico Ana Ferreira in Porto Santo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access and parking<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The course is very long. Access to the organ and cave is via the northern tip of Crete, on the golf side.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end of the road is a track to the parking lot. But it&#8217;s not long. It just has a few big dents. Depending on conditions, you may or may not be able to get there by normal car. No technical difficulties.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reach the cave on foot, you&#8217;ll need good hiking boots and some semi-climbing on the slippery rock walls.<\/p>\n\n<figure
